INTRO

ever wonder how you make the little dust particles that float in the air around lights? well here's how you do it.

i will type out what you need to do but if you dont like to read just look at the screenshot :)

Entities needed

func_dustmotes

texture

tools/nodraw

setup

  1. Set up the prop or widow where the light will be shineing in
  2. Add whatever lighting you want in your prop or where ever you plan on using this effect
  3. Use you brush tool (screenshot B) and create a box or whatever shap you want the particles to float in (doesnt make that much of a difference the shape of the box really)
  4. Click on you box, hit "ctrl+t" and type in the dropdown menu "func_dustmotes" without the "" no doubt :)

settings

  1. The default settings dont look that good so use most/all the settings i use
  2. i suggest the color to be **255 228 174** (looks natural) particle per second: 15
  3. maximum visible distance: 1024, minimum particle size / maximum particle size "10 / 20
  4. last, alpha: 225

thats it! your done, you can play with the settings all you want, this is just what i use (it looks good so...yeah)

I feel stupid... i made this with a unusual texture, so that's why the little stupid things weren't appearing xD My problem was simple: it had to be NODRAW

Goddamn, simple, but clarifying tutorial, thanks.

And Himura Kenshin OVA's 4ever man... Love them, im addicted

    Good tut.

Posted by h4mx0r I've only noticed dust in HL2, but I've never noticed it being used in CSS

They actually are used in de_dust 1 and 2, you should try to focus around the lights in the tunnels and you will be able to spot them.

Very unnoticeable but it does give a cool effect to the map.

    Turbosmooth dat shit.
