In this tutorial, I will be teaching you how to create building walls that look destroyed, which you can use to create some nice looking buildings whit lots of detail. I am writing this Tutorial assuming that you already know how to use Displacements. If you do not know how to use Displacements, consider reading Lost's displacement Tutorial. Start off by Opening Hammer and opening your map or starting a new map. Create a simple floor and a small brush for the wall, texture it whatever you want. Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us Now copy and paste that brush and resize it so that each copy you made is a different height/length. It should look somewhat like this Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us Once that's done, Use the Vertex Manipulation Tool (Image Hosted by ImageShack.us) to make each vertex is aligned. When you're done it should look something like this: Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us Notice how all the corners of the brushes are connected, they have to be connected, but it doesn't have to look like that, you can use whatever shape you want. Now lets continue. Select all the brushes that you Vertex Manipulated, and open up the Texture Application Tool (Image Hosted by ImageShack.us) and move over to the Displacements tab. Click the "Create" button and use a Power of 3. Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us Now while you are still in the Texture Application Window, select the top faces of the brush. Once you do, your brush should look like this: Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us Now, select the "Noise" button and add in the following values: Image Hosted by ImageShack.us Press OK and your wall should look something like this: Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us You should notice that the wall now looks all retarded and the displacement part has moved from the wall, this is because you haven't sewn the displacements yet, that is what we are going to do now. Open up the Texture Application Tool and select all the faces that are Visible including the displacement face. Your selection should look like this: Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us Now that they are Selected, hit the "Sew" Button. You should notice that all the sides of the top displacement face is now connected with the faces on the side. It should look something like this: Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us You can now add more destroyed walls and a few debris props like rebars etc to make it look a lot better. Here's some things I've recently done using this effect: Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.usFree Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.usNote: This tutorial shows it the easy way, but for a better effect you should try creating the displacements by using the "Paint Geometry" tool instead of adding Noise, it takes longer, but is usually worth it. Pros: Very nice and readable, worked fine on my first map Notes: On orange and dev_xxx maps the "easy" is mostly better then the more difficult one

    Same 'xact thing.

If you only select one surface and turn it into a displacement, the rest of the brush is removed. Instead of selecting the one surface, select the entire brush (effectively selecting all of the surfaces) then turn the entire brush into a displacement. This works for me, though sometimes a surface you are not trying to edit ends up changed.

Otherwise, you can make a duplicate of the original brush directly over the original, select the face you want to displace, and go from there, trying to keep all the edges lined up.

    Not real. Ignore.

This is truly a good tutorial. Good work. I used this a long time ago. Well now I came across it again, I am using it for my mod. Where the city gets destroyed. It is really easy to do. Good work.
