This tutorial will teach you how to set up HDR lighting in your maps, so that your map can then look something like this. As you can see, HDR makes a huge difference in how a map looks. With lighting, a map can look good, but with HDR a map can look beautiful. Here's another map that, without HDR lighting, wouldn't be all that appealing. Now let's get started, Open up Hammer and the map that you plan to add the HDR to. Make sure that you have at least 1 light_environment entity in your map, it doesn't matter where, just as long as it's inside the map and not in the Void. Using the Entity tool (Image Hosted by ImageShack.us) add the entity env_tonemap_controller into your map. Open up it's properties panel and give it a name. I'll be naming mine tonemap. Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us Now, you are done with that, you can close it. Now once again using the Entity tool (Image Hosted by ImageShack.us) add the entity logic_auto to your map. Open up it's properties panel and move straight to the Outputs tab. Key in the Following Outputs.
  • My Output named: OnMapSpawn
  • Targets Entities Named: Tonemap(or the name you called yours)
  • Via This Input: SetAutoExposureMin
  • With a Parameter Override of: .15
Add in another with the following settings:
  • My Output named: OnMapSpawn
  • Targets Entities Named: Tonemap(or the name you called yours)
  • Via This Input: SetAutoExposureMax
  • With a Parameter Override of: 3
And Finally, the last output settings:
  • My Output named: OnMapSpawn
  • Targets Entities Named: Tonemap(or the name you called yours)
  • Via This Input: SetBloomScale
  • With a Parameter Override of: .7
It should look something like this when you're done: Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us There is one last thing that you need to do for it to work. When you compile, you must have the HDR box checked near VRAD. Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us In order for the HDR to function correctly, you must build your cubemaps with both HDR on and Off. If you do not know how, please refer to this tutorial for information. You are done!Note: Compiling a map with HDR will drastically decrease VRAD's Speed. It takes a long time, but it is usually worth it. To enable HDR, +mathdrenabled # If #=0, LDR If #=1, HDR +mathdrlevel # If #=0, No HDR If #=1, LDR and full bloom If #=2, full HDR and full bloom (but +mathdrlevel 0/1/2 doesn't have any effect if +mathdrenabled # is set to 0)
