***********[edit]*********

by the request of mr.blue i have changed the tutorial to the better (i think)

***********[edit]********* !UPDATED!

Hi and welcome to the super duper "skin" tutorial

My nick is the_kill3r (in game "The Killer") im from sweden so my spelling may be wrong in some words and other stuff but i think you will understand what i say.

after this you can say to your buddies

"pff, skinning is as easy as pie"

**********getting started********************

  1. First things first, get a picture editing program like photoshop or or just use paint

  2. get this program

    Vtfedit

with this program u can open the *.vtf files and export them to a selected folder

when you export the selected *.VTF file you can choose which type of file you want it to be if its going to be *.TGA , *.BMP or *.JPEG

  3. Install the vtf edit program

And then open the VTFedit program

Now you will see the "file system" tab to the left thats where you are looking for vtf files

they can be anywhere on the hard drive but the originals for CS:S are in the same map as the steam apps folder

its called "counter-strike source shared.gfc" (look at picture #1)

**********to the skinning**************

1.

Double click on a *.vtf file for example:

Steam\SteamApps\counter-strike source shared.gfc \cstrike\materials\models\props\csoffice\coffeemug.vtf

when you have double clicked the *.vtf a picture of the skin will appear to the right in the gray square.

now you want to export the file to a map where u will find it for later

to export press ctrl+E or go File > export

in the export window you can choose the place for the file. (*.bmp, *.tga or *.jpeg are the formats for export)

2.

Now open up your picture editing program and open the file(*.jpeg *.tga or *.bmp) u just exported

*.tga can only be opened in advanced picture editing programs like photoshop

(but *.jpeg and *.bmp can be opened in paint if u want to use that)

  1. Start edit the skin

  2. When you are finished

    save the file

    then open VTFedit

to send the file to vtf edit click ctrl + i or File > Import

when you have imported the file a screen comes up but just press "ok" on that one (it's for advanced users)

    then save it as *.vtf

if u want to know where to put it all of these materials files will be put in

"counter-strike source\cstrike\materials"

(then you have a lot of under folders)

console decals effects models

etc and etc

to get the right folder and name for the vtf just check the name from where you took the vtf file from the beginning

if your file is named "bananite mugs"

the real name is coffee_mug.vtf

and its destination is counter-strike source\cstrike\materials\models\ props\cs_office

"and thats the way the cookie crumbles" the killer here on fpsbanana.com Tuts, back to you skinners!

any more help?, well just ask and i think i can guide you through
