Extract the left 4 dead demo files.

GCFScape v1.7.1 NOW HAS .VPK COMPATIBLITY! DOWNLOAD NOW

OLD WAY This tutorial will teach you how to open and extract the encrypted .vpk file in the left 4 dead demo.

1) Go here http://blog.gib.me/2008/11/14/left4dead-vpk-extraction-tools-now-with-ui/ and download the Left4Dead *.vpk Extraction Tools.

Extract the .zip and you should get this:

2) Now, run the .exe. Click extract and open the .vpk file in C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead demo\left4dead. Select a folder to extract all the files in and wait.

And, you're done! Happy modding!

    can't you just extract the sounds by opening the l4d games directory using a program called "gcfscape" ?

    I've tried that. GCFScape can't extract files from .vpk files. EDIT: How the hell do I use this? EDIT2: Nevermind.

    I cant extract the vpk :S can you help me pls

    there hes extract folder and hes stop at :materials\models\survivors\teenangst\teenangsteyeballl.vmt

    and a window error spawn in my face!!! its a window ( dont send )...

    pls anybodies help me thanks you.

    I need help.. if i want to open for example a weapon ( the vtf ) with photoshop it say me an error.. with vtf edit the same

    There were some rumors floating around that using the .vpk extractor while running Steam may cause you to get VAC banned. I'm not too sure to the validity of this, but I'm not willing o find out.

    It might be because they don't want players to be able to modify the material files so that you can easily see zombies, provoking an unequal gameplay environment.
