My first portal map and my second map at all
File includes the map(.bsp), a .bns, a .tga an a readme(.txt)
Hi @all downloaders of the map and Paper Shadow,
first of all i want to say thanks to all downloaders and give special thanks to Paper Shadow for his great feedback. I have worked on a new version, but i had to stop work cause of time problems. But now i see the map has nearly 100 downloads and that makes me proud and i want to improve the map with the cons Paper Schadow mentioned and perhaps i make it a bit longer.... I will starting the work next week after writing some test at school.
Mfg Wutoholik
PS: excuse my bad english, I'm from bavaria

An interesting map, to say the least. I'm going to list loads of cons, but don't be put off. This map has pontential..
PROS: + It works... :P
CONS: - The water isn't a major gameplay feature. It's just there, doing nothing, but it still is a part of the level. In addition, you can shoot portals onto the floor if you are not in the water. It kinda screws up that portal...
The use of pointviewcontrol or whatever you used to show what the buttons did could be better, or even be removed and replaced with Indicator Lights (http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Creatingindicatorlights). On that note, your buttons are meh. I suggest you use the switch models (http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Creatinga_switch).
As you can see in the fouth screenshot, you can use create portals in that corridor. I believe it is because you didn't use the Metal Wall textures from Portal, and instead used a generic metal wall texture. It doens't fit in, really.
Talking about Metal Walls, you used a Metal Wall texture for a part of the floor. There is a Metal Floor texture somewhere, I suggest you look around for that. Also, look at this tutorial at detailing metal walls (http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Detailingmetalwalls). It will make your map look better.
Brushes with a grate texture (Like the one you used the guard the final door) doesn't stop portals. In fact, you can shoot a portal at the door. Not sure if you can end the level that way..
Use the funcportalbumper (http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Funcportalbumper). Parts of the map are harder becasue you have to shoot in the middle of the target, when in Portal you just have to shoot at the target and the funcportalbumper will knock the portal into a place where you can create a portal. It really helps...
The begining and ending are poor, to be honest. I suggest you create a elevator (http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Creatingaportal_elevator), or use an elevator prefab to spice up your map. At the moment, it is just you standing in front of a door for a begining and opening a door for the end. If you really want to be fancy, make a custom begining and ending.
Improvements: - The Above
Notes: As I said earlier, don't be put off by the number of cons. This map has potential. You just have to put some more effort into it to make it perfect. It is alright as of now, but you can make it better. Good luck...
