xmas map in a quiet village

Nordhaven Special B3 The Traditional Winter Festival of the North

now available in strawberry beta flavour!

Something I've put a lot of work into (and still plan to put a substantial amount into), Nordhaven is to be my xmas/newyear map of 2009.

Nordhaven is a quiet village in the northern regions, where the midwinter festival is one of the most important times of the year for the inhabitants. They celebrate the coming of the new year by exchanging gifts, dancing, getting drunk and engaging in the traditional midwinter game of "steal the suitcase".

although not completely finished, I wanted to release a gameplay ready version to iron out the gameplay and other bugs that I might have missed.

==== Nordhaven_special is a spin off of the traditional CTF gameplay, where you must capture all the presents on the map and place them under your tree. the team to collect the most at the end of the round wins. note: there are a finite number of presents available, and they CAN be stolen from the other team.

    Pros: Awesome look and feel. Nicely done colored lighting effects. Snow effect.

    Cons: Have to manually drop intel in cap zones unlike official tf2 maps. Needs counter to show remaining presents instead of progress bar. Beginning of round instructions for different map. No HUD indicator to show if you have intel. Health 'presents' replacement models confused with intel 'presents' models. Too many different 'presents' models - should be more easily identifiable. How about one model dressed in different colors? Low FPS. Needs optimization help.

    Also, went into overtime, but we couldn't figure out why.

    Because of the current gameplay issues, I'm going to replace this with the CTF version until things improve.

    BTW, if you need help with programming issues, I have experience.

    Very nice themed map, and the custom snow particles are really cool.

    The only thing that would stop me trying this out on a server would be my fps; less than half of what i get on valves maps, and this is in a lan server. A quck look with mat_wireframe shows half of the map is rendering from the spawn point.

    I guess optimisation got brushed aside in the rush to get this out for xmas, still a nice map to look at, if not play on:)

This map was made with a great set of textures that to together perfectly, the combination of colors used in this map are perfect as well. The addition of adding all those colored lights really enhances the look of the map and adds life to it. I love the buildings that you have used, they feature a distinct architecture that looks wonderful and fits perfectly with the Christmas map theme. There are also other small details that I noticed such as making ammo small Christmas presents, a small but noticeable change that shows the depth of work you included in the map. I also want to note that I loved the use of emitters, the falling snow is much different then I have ever seen before. It actually holds a snow looking texture to it which is just awesome. As for the layout of the map, I guess I could say it's perfect. I was only able to try the map out myself, but both the design and layout of the map seems to be great. Very nice job on this map, you have earned a very high rating from me ^^

    thank you CH. I do recommend you buy TF2 though, it's a fun game (deceptively so, i got mine bundled with portal and episode2, when i eventually started playing it i got hooked straight away).

    oh, and just an FYI, there's over 350 custom files in this map, so it's not exactly a good representation of how official TF2 maps look :P
