Map Size Problem

By Z3R0K0 4 years ago

HELLO TO FPSBANANA

I was just wondering can someone post a tutorial on making files have to download from th server, to save space on maps.

More specifically, cutoms textures and sound etc take up too much space when i use pakrat. I was wondering if there is a way you can make it so instead of having to download it all in the map, you could have the textures and etc download seperatly. Can this be done with a .wad file. If so HELP xD

Thanks for taking your time to read this.

It can be done, but you don 't save file size by doing it.

You can better put everything in the .bsp. That way everybody will have the correct files they need.

The total size of the download will not change whether the files are inside the .BSP of as separate files, the only difference is going to be that when embedded there will be no clutter of files in people's folders and people newer to handling custom maps will find the map easier to add to their map collection/server since there is only one file to place in a very easy to find place.

Hmm i do realise that i wont reduce the size of the download, even so i believe if their was a way for the custom textures etc to download seperatly (into the correct folders) from the map then when the textures are used in another map people wont have to re-download them. Therefore saving download times in the future.

So no-one knows a way of making wad files?

The Source engine doesn't use WAD files, the closest you can get to what you want is a .res file which is basically a txt file listing textures and the location of the textures for the download. It just doesn't make sense to use res files anymore since zipping the files into the bsp is just so much easier and eliminates a lot of the problems for inexperienced server operators.

    Thanks

Did you maintain the same folder tree in the bsp with pakrat?
